The USS John S. McCain sails for Pearl Harbor in January 2018

The USSJohn S. John S McCain sails into Pearl Harbor for the first time in 18 months, marking a major milestone for the Navy’s effort to replace its aging fleet.

The carrier, the first ship in the United States Navy to serve in that role since the decommissioning of the USS Iowa in 2002, will be the first U.S. carrier to carry the nuclear-powered Aegis Combat System, which is part of the new Joint Strike Fighter.

The ship will serve as a platform for the Air Force to test the air-to-air missiles that are the backbone of the Joint Strike Fighters.
